Fun critical thinking activities for toddlers

Building thinking skills can be a fun and easy way to help your toddler build their critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning and logic skills. Building Thinking Skills Beginning 2 is the second book in the series, and it helps toddlers develop important concepts such as spatial awareness by encouraging them to find patterns in the shapes on each page. The pages are of critical thinking activities for toddlers and preschoolers, and are a fun way to review as well as master new critical thinking and problem solving concepts.

This activity book is for kids ages 3-4 years old children will learn about shape recognition, spatial awareness, and early math concepts. Each page of this book is filled with fun critical thinking activities, like shapes and illustrations for your child with varying instructions: Small and big, which one has the most circles, and circle the shape that’s NOT orange.

How it works

Your tot can also search out items on the page. For example, animals hidden in simple shapes or patterns are shown on some pages so children can practice finding their favorite animal’s shape within the pattern. On other pages colors are hidden in a scene so children can search for certain colors while practicing color recognition.

How my tot uses Building Thinking Skills Beginner 2

Scout is 3 1/2 years old and he knows his numbers, shapes, how to spell his name, all upper letters and most lowercase letters. He can determine what’s big and what’s small, and he can see the difference in items when you put them side by side. Pretty impressive to me, especially since I still see him as a teeny infant baby!

This activity book is challenging for very beginner kiddos, though, which his why they have Book 1 to help build those beginner skills. From using this book, I can tell Scout still needs some foundational skills to master before jumping full-time into Building Thinking Skills Beginner 2.

Such as knowing which number is “bigger” and what positions are called:

But there are several pages he can still accomplish. And with these fun critical thinking activities throughout the book, it will teach him to literally use his brain and stretch that muscle!

How to work through this book with your toddler

This activity book is not one of those books where you just put it in front of him and leave him to it. If your toddler has not mastered his basics, then Beginner #2 is not for him; instead, check out the first book in the Building Thinking Skills series for beginning critical thinking activities for toddlers.

Then Beginner #2 book has instructions for every page with a purpose. So, even though your toddler could color every page of this book, that’s not what this book is about. (Although, not every page is exactly color-able since there are colored shapes on some of those pages!)

You’ll find ultimate success when you sit next to your kiddo and work on the pages and activities with him. Explain the instructions to your little one and show him how it works at first.

If he’s lost, just explains the basics to him and what you need to him to do. Ask him questions so that he can come to the answer himself like: How many circles is in this first box? How many circles are in the second one? And is 6 bigger than 5? So is the one with 6 circles the answer?

Walk him through the steps he needs to take to arrive at the answer. Some activities uses coloring and some activities will need a pencil. Or he can just point to the answer instead of circling the answer.

This book is a little challenging but in a good way. I like how he doesn’t come out immediately with the answer and it literally makes him think! I love that! Whereas many other activity books are just a review over what’s already learned, Building Thinking Skills Beginner 2 will teach your child new ways to critically think through answers and solve the problems! It’s great! I’m quite impressed with these fun critical thinking activities!
