When it comes to finding the best Bible for teenager kiddos, for me, the options do NOT feel endless, but instead, they feel extremely limited. However, once you narrow down the bible translation you want your teen to have, you can decide what other features you might like this teen Bible to possess.

For instance, what is the purpose for? Are you wanting to pull it out to study with, like deep dive studying? Or, do you want them to grow with the Bible (so more evergreen)? From this aspect, it could then feel slightly endless because there’s truly a Bible version and feature for every stage of your teen’s faith journey. And with so many translation to boot—New International Version, New King James Version, English Standard Version—how do you know which is the perfect Bible for your teen guy or girl?

Listen when I tell you: I have done so much research for the very purpose of wanting a Bible for my teenage boy and my teenage girl to be able to use and study with – not just *with* me but ideally for themselves in their own Bible study time. And I want them to be able to truly understand and comprehend to the best of their ability what the Bible is really saying in context because they’re at that age now where things click a bit clearer for them where things align and come together for them, in a big picture epiphany.

They can take all those Bible stories they’ve heard all along and now read them for themselves in a way that they can truly see the impact each one has had in ‘HIStory’ and understand the deeper meaning of whywhy did that happen at that point in timewhy things needed to line up for God to bring forth His ultimate plan.

After much much much much MUCH research and consideration, I’ve narrowed down what I preferred they have as a teen and I added answers to the most asked questions you might be having when looking for the best teen bibles.

How To Narrow Down The Best Bibles For Teens

Let’s face it—when you’re picking out the best bible for teenager gal or boy, it feels a little like picking out their first car. It needs to be reliable (God’s Word, obvs), come with useful features like study notes or book introductions, and ideally, not get tossed into the back of a closet next to their forgotten hobbies of past times

Regardless of which translation you get, whether you’re choosing a New American Standard Bible, New International Reader’s Version,  or a New Living Translation, what’s most important is finding a Bible that resonates with them in their various phases of life or even their specific stage of life (preference is yours) – especially when “I know, Mom” is the battle cry of every teenager.

For your fashion-forward mom of teen girls, the Teen Study Bible (in a stylish ‘teen girls pink’) offers a great option for those interested in both biblical studies and a pop of color.

Meanwhile, teen guys might lean towards something more rugged like a youth edition of the New Revised Standard Version, the New English Translation, or the bold NIV Bible.

Of course, if your teen prefers the feel of paper, Nelson Place and HarperCollins Christian Publishing have great options.

You can also see Bibles with reading plans already inside and designed for young readers.

See my must have Bible resources here.

You might also want to get a Bible with a translation as your own, like I did, so you guys ca study together – during or outside of your homeschool Bible lessons or morning time/basket.

Isaiah 9:6

If you want them to understand the word more and you aren’t picky about translation, then get a Bible translation that makes reading it easier to understand, such as:

  • New Living Translation
  • The Message
  • the Good News Translation

Additionally, there are also study Bibles specifically designed for teenagers that include helpful notes and explanations to aid in understanding the text. These can be great tools for young readers who may struggle with certain passages or concepts.

It’s important to find a Bible translation that resonates with your teen and makes them excited about studying God’s word. Don’t be afraid to try out different translations until you find one that clicks with them.

3 Types of Bible Translations

Translations of the Bible can be categorized into three main types:

  1. Dynamic Equivalence (thought-for-thought)
  2. Formal Equivalence (or Literal Translations) (word-for-word)
  3. Paraphrase Translations

Dynamic Equivalence

The dynamic equivalence translation focuses on conveying the overall meaning and intent of the original text rather than adhering strictly to the exact words. They use modern language and idioms to enhance comprehension, making them particularly beneficial for young readers and those unfamiliar with archaic language. It uses thought-for-thought translation rather than word-for-word, allowing for a smoother reading experience and improved understanding.

This method of translation is commonly used in the homeschooling community, as it allows for a more relatable and engaging reading experience. It also helps students to better understand the context and themes of the original text, encouraging critical thinking and analysis skills. And, using these translations can foster a love for literature and language among young readers. By making classic works more accessible and enjoyable, students are more likely to develop an appreciation for writing and storytelling.

Popular examples include the New International Version (NIV) and New Living Translation (NLT).

Formal Equivalence (or Literal Translations)

These translations strive for word-for-word accuracy, making them ideal for in-depth study. They are preferred by those seeking a precise understanding of the original text. Bibles for these are typically referred to as “formal equivalence” or “word-for-word” translations.

Literal translations are a valuable tool for those looking to dive deeper into the original text. As their name suggests, literal translations strive for an exact word-for-word rendering of the source material, making them ideal for in-depth study and analysis. These translations prioritize accuracy and precision, aiming to capture the truest meaning of each individual word.

Some Bible translations with literal translations include the King James Version and New American Standard Bible. However, it’s important to note that literal translations may not always flow smoothly or be as easily understood by modern readers. Because they prioritize accuracy over readability, some phrases or idioms may not be translated in a way that makes sense in contemporary language.

Paraphrase Translations

Aimed at making the text more accessible, paraphrase translations simplify language and rephrase complex phrases. While they can enhance understanding for beginners, they may not accurately convey the original meaning, relying on the translator’s interpretation. Examples include The Living Bible and The Easy-to-Read Version.

A few bibles that come to mind are the Action Bible, set up like a comic strip, and The Child’s Story Bible by Catherine F. Vos set up like one long story Bible for kids. (I have both and use these for read aloud time but not for my teen’s individual bible.)

When it comes to choosing a Bible for your teen, you have different types of translations available. Each translation has its own unique approach to translating the original text, and understanding these approaches can help you find a Bible that best suits their needs.

10 Questions Answered When Looking for The Best Bibles for Teens

So let’s narrow down the bibles to find a really good bible for teens! To do just that, here are 10 common questions answered about finding the best Bible for teenager gals and guys:

    1. What’s the best Bible version for teenagers?

The best Bible version depends on the teen’s reading level and preference. Like, do they like the helpful commentary or study notes at the bottom? If so, they would probably like a teen study bible more than a traditional one. Or do YOU want them to have these notes or topical articles within the bible? Again, a teen study bible might be just that. If deep diving is your ultimate goal or what you guys are about to get ready to do, then study Bibles are it. But if you want an average everyday bible, then let’s see what else is on the menu!

Popular options for easier comprehension in understand the context of the Bible, translations include the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), and the English Standard Version (ESV). These versions are known for being easy to understand while maintaining the integrity of God’s Word.

In fact, I, myself, purchased my girl teen and my boy teen each a Tyndale Study Bible NLT translation primarily for the fact that it is easier for them to digest the meaning and the context. And also, I wanted us to study the Bible together with the same translation for easier discussions and referencing.

Because, to me, when you’re just beginning to study the Bible, fancy words aren’t hardly as helpful as words that you can really understand. Therefore, the KJV or the NKJV wasn’t on my list of possibilities at this point. I might get them a NKJV Bible later in life but, for right now, my ultimate goal is for them to start reading the Bible in order to understand the Bible.

If you want your daughter or son to have a Bible with traditional context, by all means, get the NKJV translation. Several moms and dads believe in only the New King James Version as the closest to the literal translation and if that’s you, that’s fine.

Whatever best fits with your family – get that translation.

But if you aren’t as concerned with traditional word-for-word context, or literal translations, and you just want a Bible that is easy to understand and good for your teen to read and actually use, there are many other translations out there that can meet your needs, like the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT) or English Standard Version (ESV).

It’s important to consider what you’re looking for in a Bible translation before making a decision. Are you primarily interested in accuracy and staying true to the original text? Or do you value readability and a modern language approach? Maybe you’re looking for a balance of both.

    2. Should I choose a Study Bible for my teenager?

A teen study Bible can be a great option for young teens or for young people who want to go deeper in their biblical studies. If he or she have been asking clarifying questions or have shared an eagerness to learn more, definitely go with the study Bible.

Also, if your homeschool Bible lessons are ones where you do want to have discussions about with your teen, and perhaps even study together, then you may opt for a study Bible.

The best teen study Bible will have scripture thats easy to read and understand as wel as helpful notes and sections throughout to think further about the context. A plus would be that it also could include devotionals that help teenagers apply God’s Word to their daily lives.

To help teens better understand the Word of God, look for features like:

    • study notes
    • book introductions
    • Bible reading plans
    • red text showing Jesus speaking
    • maps and concordance
    • topical studies throughout the Bible or min-devotionals

On another note, most study bibles will tell you it’s a Study Bible in its title. For instance, you’ll find ‘study bible’ in the name is it’s a study bible. Each bible below is he best teen study bible, or one of them, in various translations: CSB, NIV, NKJV. But you’ll find my ULTIMATE favorite, best bibles for teens to study with later on below!

Essential Teen Study Bible - best bibles for teens
Quest Teen Study Bible - teen bible study resourcces
Best teen study bibles - Extreme Teen Study bible

Personally, I wanted an easy-to-understand Bible for my teens so we can not just discuss the context but so they could also go deeper with it. They need to be exposed to multiple perspectives and commentaries so they can understand, truly.

I simply wanted to study the Bible together with my teens and, if I’m being honest with myself, I wanted to walk past their rooms and witness them reading or studying the Bible all on their own. If they have more context and more information that’s EASY to read and understand what they are studying, it will hit home with them a lot more.

    3. What are some good Bibles for teen girls?

For teen girls, consider options like the NLT Teen Girls’ Bible, which offers a combination of style and substance. It’s designed with a feminine touch but doesn’t skimp on important tools for spiritual growth, like daily life application and book overviews.

Your primary goal for getting her a Bible matters here, but if your goal is to get her something that’s easy to read and comprehend the context, get her a bible with NLT or NIV translations. If you want to study the bible with her, like a family bible study or for homeschool bible lessons, lean towards a bible wtih more notes and topical studies within or a study bible, especially if you don’t mind getting something other than traditional NKJV.

For girls, I think these are really good bible for teens:

good bible for teens - NLT Jesus Centered Bible in watercolor
NLT Girl Bible - best bible for teenage girl
Daily wisdom NKJV devo bible for girls
    Color teen bibles for girls

Ultimately, I purchased this teen Bible for my teenage girl.

    4. What Bibles are good for teen boys?

For teen boys, the Tyndale NLT offers a solid choice. It’s practical, with easy-to-read comfort print, and includes helpful study notes. Other popular versions include the NIV Bible and the New King James Version (NKJV). Again, it depends on your ultimate goal here and which translation you pick.

I really like easy-to-read books for kids and teens, so you won’t find me recommending literal translations here, although I’m sure there are quite a few NKJV bibles for tees out there. However, I’m sticking to more of dynamic equivalence because I really want them to understand it at this age, to be able to read it on their own and be like, “Hey, I get that.”

A few of the best bibles for teens and my favorites for teenage boys are:

best bible for teenage boys - Tyndale NLT Life Application Study Bible
NIV Teen study bible - could be good for boy or girl
Essential Teen Study Bible - girl or boy
    Quest Study Bible for Teens

Ultimately, I purchased this teen Bible for my teenage boy.

    5. Are there Teen Bibles specifically designed for younger teens?

Yes, many student Bibles and youth edition Bibles are tailored for younger teens, offering simpler language and guidance to help them navigate their faith journey. However, for older teens and young adults who are ready for a deeper understanding of the Bible, there are also many resources available.

One option is to use a study Bible, which includes additional notes and explanations alongside the text. These can be especially helpful for tackling more complex topics or passages that may be difficult to understand on your own.

Another valuable resource is commentaries, which provide in-depth analysis and interpretations from biblical scholars. These can offer insights into historical context, cultural customs, and theological themes that may not be immediately apparent when reading the Bible alone.

    6. What should I look for in a Bible for teens?

When choosing a Bible for teens, the best teen study bible includes easy-to-read formats like comfort print, engaging study notes, and relevant devotionals or book introductions. These features help make the Bible more accessible and appealing to teens.

Easy-to-Read Formats: Teenagers often find traditional Bible text difficult to understand, so selecting a Bible with a clear, easy-to-read format is key. Look for options with comfort print, which features larger, well-spaced text designed to reduce eye strain, making it easier to read for longer periods.

Bibles like the New Living Translation (NLT) or New International Version (NIV) are known for being accessible without losing the depth of the Word of God.

Engaging Study Notes: Teen Bibles with thoughtful study notes help young readers unpack complex passages, guiding them through the meaning and context of scripture. These notes often provide historical insights, explanations of difficult terms, or reflections on how a passage applies to their daily life.

Bibles like the Teen Study Bible or those with study notes tailored for teen boys or teen girls make learning more interactive and applicable to their modern context. The Extreme Teen Study Bible is a really good bible for teens and goes deep into the Word.

Relevant Devotionals: Devotionals included in teen Bibles can provide short, daily reflections tied to specific Bible verses. These devotionals often tackle real-life issues teens face, such as friendships, faith, and identity, making the Bible reading experience personal and relatable. Look for devotionals that are written with a voice that speaks directly to the teen experience, helping them connect faith to their daily challenges.

Book Introductions and Overviews: Knowing the background of each book of the Bible—the author, time period, and key themes—can make reading more meaningful for teens. Bibles that include book introductions or overviews are great tools to give them a clearer understanding of the context and purpose behind each biblical text. These introductions can help teens navigate biblical studies with more confidence.

Durability and Design: Teens are known for being a bit rough on their belongings, so you’ll want to find a Bible that’s both durable and visually appealing. Bibles with imitation leather covers, for example, combine sturdiness with a modern look. Many options come in trendy designs that resonate with teen boys and teen girls—from rugged styles to soft pastels and even pink editions for girls who want something more vibrant.

Extras Like Reading Plans and Maps: A good teen Bible often includes Bible reading plans tailored for youth. These plans can help teens stay consistent in their reading and offer structure as they explore different books of the Bible. Additional resources like maps, charts, or timelines provide a visual representation of biblical events, which can make the Bible feel more dynamic and relevant to them.

    7. Is there a difference between a teen Bible and a regular Bible?

Yes, there is a significant difference between a teen Bible and a regular Bible. While both contain the same core text, teen Bibles include additional features specifically designed to help young readers connect with scripture on a personal level.

These features include study notes, reflections on daily life, devotionals, and practical resources like Bible reading plans, maps, and Q&A sections that address common questions teens face.

In contrast, regular Bibles generally lack these tools tailored for younger readers’ developmental and spiritual needs.

While the core Word of God remains the same, these extras can help teenagers apply scripture to their lives.

    8. What’s a good Bible for teens new to reading the Bible?

For teens just starting out, the New Living Translation (NLT) or the New International Version (NIV) are great options. They both offer easier-to-understand language, making it simpler for new readers to grasp the message of God’s Word.

Again, these teen bibles are what I picked for my teen boy and teen girl. They are both the New Living Translation (NLT) versions and both are study bibles. But the best teen bible provides not only easy-to-read scripture but also includes insightful notes and devotionals that help teenagers apply God’s Word to their daily lives.
